Hottest Summer For These Top 10 West Coast Cities
Heat is expected during summer, but this year has been exceptional. Midway through July, the hottest month of the season, it’s evident that this summer is one for the record books. Across the US, there are many cities that are on course to have one of their 10-warmest summers ever.
Average temperatures in hundreds of US cities have far exceeded expected temps, but the most exceptionally warm of those are on the West Coast.
Since June 1, the average daily temperatures, determined by averaging each day’s high and low, have risen several degrees above normal in hundreds of cities. These temperatures provide a more comprehensive measure of the season’s heat, accounting for both hotter days and warmer nights.
Las Vegas, Nevada is undergoing its hottest summer on record, making it the hottest city across the United States. Las Vegas temperature has risen by 7.3% since last summer. Many of the other cities experiencing the most extreme summer heat are located in the West, particularly in or near California’s Central Valley.
The top 10 cities shown in the below table are experiencing the highest increases in temperatures in all of the country. Looking at temperatures from June 1-July 14, 2024, these are the hottest because the average daily temperatures have gone up by 6.2% or higher.
